There are at least 80 million people who suffer from chronic pain in the U.S. alone, and the personal and economic cost is enormous for society. However, little is understood about the nature of pain, nor about how best to treat pain. A new understanding of pain is urgently needed. Claire's research goal is to utilize optical neural control strategies to study strategies for reducing pain symptoms. Claire was named a John Reed UROP in 2010.
